Oliver Hahn - March 6, 2015 Dark matter simulations in the continuum limit N-body simulations are the backbone of numerical cosmology but their discrete nature poses various challenges both when modelling and when analysing the continuum properties of the dark matter fluid. These are particularly evident in simulations of warm dark mater structure formation and in multi-fluid simulations. I will review recent progress in analysis and simulation techniques that go beyond the particle approach and attempt to recover the continuum limit and the full fine-grained distribution function. While still being in their infancy, these techniques are able to already solve many of the problems of the N-body method.
